Snowflake obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass (igneous rock) characterized by its jet-black color dotted with white, gray, or brown "snowflake" patterns. These patterns are inclusions of the mineral cristobalite (a form of quartz) that form when lava cools slowly enough to allow partial crystallization. It is a durable stone often used in jewelry.
