Lapis lazuli is a deep-blue metamorphic rock prized since antiquity for jewelry, carvings, and as the pigment ultramarine. Primarily mined in Afghanistan's Badakshan province, it is also found in Chile and Russia. Featuring a matte to sub-vitreous luster, it is often dotted with gold-colored pyrite.
