The name originates from ancient Greek roots meaning "spotted or speckled stone," which directly references the unique mineral impurities, sediment, or ash trapped inside during its formation. Because of its immense durability and high-shine finish when polished, it has been used as a semi-precious gemstone for jewelry, ornamentation, and tools for thousands of years.
