Hypersthene is an orthorhombic mineral from the pyroxene group, composed mainly of iron and magnesium silicate. It is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks, as well as in some meteorites, and is known for its dark, brownish-gray or greenish color and a shimmering, coppery, metallic surface sheen called schiller or labradorescence. Its name comes from the Greek words for "above" and "strength."
