Ammonites are group of extinct marine mollusks that lived in the oceans from about 400 to 66 million years ago. As distant relatives of modern squid and octopuses, they are best known for their beautifully coiled, ribbed, and spiral shells. They sometimes contain ammolite.
Ammolite is a rare, iridescent organic gemstone formed from the fossilized shells of ammonites. It is found almost exclusively in the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, it is prized for its spectacular, rainbow-like play of colors that rival opal.
