Black tourmaline, also known as schorl, is a complex boron silicate mineral and the most common variety of tourmaline. It is rich in iron and typically opaque with a deep black color. It is highly prized in both mineralogy and metaphysical practices for its physical durability and protective qualities.
The name Tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhalese word “turmali” meaning “a mixed color precious stone” or “something small from the earth.”
It is an alternative birthstone to opal for all October babies.
