Tsavorite is a rare, green variety of garnet. It's a calcium aluminum silicate that gets its color from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. British geologist Campbell R. Bridges discovered tsavorite in 1967 in the Simanjiro District of Tanzania, abd he discovered a second deposit in Kenya four years later, which led to the first commercially viable mine opening in 1974.
The stone is named after the Tsavo River and Tsavo National Game Reserve, which are nearby.
